Generation C

Generation C

The Nielsen Company and NM Incite (a joint venture between Nielsen and McKinsey & Company) in their recently released U.S. Digital Consumer Report dubbed the current young adult generation “Generation C” based on their “connected” behaviors.  This group – Americans between the ages of 18 and 24 – accounts for approximately 23% of the population according to the most recent U.S. Census but they spend far more time socializing and consuming media through their devices than other “generations.”   Continue reading

Internet usage in 2012

World in your handEver since I first got onto the Internet in the late 1980s and involved in its commercialization in the early 1990s I’ve seen year after year of brilliant (and sometimes silly) innovation and growth.  It should be no surprise that pundits the world over are looking to 2012 to be yet another record-setting year wherein more people get online and stay online in ways that are well understood and some that may emerge before our very eyes (Pinterest, anyone?).   Continue reading

Yesterday my former colleagues at Nielsen released their “State of the Media: Consumer Usage Report” for 2011 which has a decidedly U.S. focus.  During the first week of November Nielsen released an infographic triptych that in hindsight was an excellent preview for this report.   Continue reading

For the first time since its launch in September 2009, the Facebook app for Android has surpassed the daily active users of the Facebook app for iPhone.  As of December 17 the Android app captured 58.3 million users while the users of Facebook’s iPhone app totaled 900,000 less or 57.4 million users.   Continue reading

Location-based applications

Mobile social87.5%

Earlier this month Forrester Research announced that only 6% of U.S. mobile phone owners use a location based application although that figure is up 3x from 2% in 2010 (coincidentally Foursquare announced the day prior that their user base had grown 3x from 2010 to 15 million). That said the word is clearly getting out among mobile users.   Continue reading

Apple’s share of mobile advertising

Apple iAd15%

Launched last year and touted by Apple’s then CEO the late (great) Steve Jobs, iAd was supposed to be their answer to Google’s AdMob mobile advertising platform.  With a relatively complicated and inflexible pricing schema, iAd confused and upset advertisers – all of whom initially had to commit to $1 million in advertising spend, although that number was dropped to $500,000 shortly thereafter.   Continue reading
