On December 21st digital media measurement firm comScore released their 2011 social media year in review whitepaper entitled “It’s a Social World: Top 10 Need-to-Knows About Social Networking and Where It’s Headed.” Rich with insights and data points, the whitepaper outlines the importance of social media in today’s world. Accounting for one out of ever five minutes spent online in October 2011, social media activity dominates the digital landscape and has enormous implications for marketers worldwide. Social media touches fully 82% of the Internet’s population which represents 1.2 billion people globally.
When one talks about social media they’re really talking about Facebook and everything else. Today the social giant accounts for three out of every four minutes spent on social media sites and one out of every seven minutes spent online period. Facebook dominates virtually every country market (except for a few select exceptions) in which they operate but appear to be within striking distance of overtaking the incumbent in 2012.
